Alternatives to Jev and running models locally

When to consider Laya, a traditional classifier or a generative model instead of Jev, and what a fair comparison has to include.

An open SDK is not an open model

According to OpenRouter, TypeSafe has not published Jev’s weights or a research paper about it; all users call the same hosted proprietary model. S17

Laya is a different project

The model card for Laya by Convai Innovations lists open weights and an Apache 2.0 license. The project offers a decision interface; it is not the official Jev from TypeSafe. The author’s comparisons with Jev are not our own controlled test on identical inputs. S20

How we would choose

At low volume, a simple API can have lower total operating costs than running your own model. With sensitive data, running a model locally can make sense even without any savings. Free weights do not mean zero cost for servers and maintenance.

For unambiguous rules, we recommend code. For a fixed set of labels and enough labeled data, a traditional classifier is also worth comparing. If the task needs coherent text, use a generative model. We do not declare a single winner for every situation.

What a fair comparison must include

The same goal, the same test sample, known hardware, model loading, network time, consumption and errors. Local compute time cannot be compared with the total response time of a remote API without an explanation.
